Easy Basil Pesto Recipe in 10 Minutes (Fresh and Homemade)

Hey there, kitchen explorers! Let me tell you about one of my absolute favorite things to whip up   Easy Basil Pesto. It’s bright green, super tasty, and the smell is just wow! I love this pesto because it’s super easy to make and tastes like something you’d get in a fancy restaurant (but way easier on the wallet!). I always keep a jar in the fridge ready to go.

Let’s get started and make some delicious green magic!

Method in Detail

1. Gathering the Ingredients

Before you start blending, make sure all your ingredients are prepped and ready to go. Wash the basil leaves gently under cool water and pat them dry with a clean towel or paper towel   you don’t want any extra water sneaking into your pesto. Peel your garlic cloves and grate your parmesan if it’s not pre-grated. Squeeze the juice from one fresh lemon, and measure out the olive oil, pine nuts, and seasonings. Having everything ready makes the process so much smoother!

2. Blending the Base

Now for the fun part   let’s blend! Add the basil leaves, pine nuts, lemon juice, olive oil, grated parmesan, and garlic cloves into your food processor or blender. Sprinkle in a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. I like to add the lemon juice early so it blends evenly and brings brightness to the entire sauce.

3. Creating the Perfect Texture

Blend the mixture until everything comes together into a smooth, creamy consistency. You might need to pause and scrape down the sides of the bowl once or twice to make sure everything blends evenly   no chunks left behind! The texture should be silky but still have a tiny bit of texture from the nuts and cheese. If it’s looking a little thick, you can add a small splash more of olive oil and blend again until it reaches the perfect consistency.

4. Taste Testing

Once it’s all blended, give it a quick taste with a spoon. Want a bit more zing? Add another small squeeze of lemon juice. Need a touch more flavor? A pinch of salt or pepper should do the trick. Tasting before storing is my secret to getting it just right every time.

5. Storing Your Pesto

After everything is perfectly blended and seasoned, spoon your pesto into a clean jar or airtight container. Seal it tightly and pop it into the fridge. It will stay fresh for 2–3 days, and the flavor often gets even better after sitting for a few hours!

Necessary Tools

To make this super green sauce, you’ll need:

  • A food processor or blender
  • A measuring jug or spoon
  • A citrus squeezer (or just squeeze the lemon with your hand!)
  • A spoon or spatula
  • A jar or airtight container for storing

  • Spoon it into a jar and store in the fridge for a couple of days. It’s that easy!

Notes

  • Don’t over-blend, it should be smooth, but not too runny.
  • Add the lemon juice before blending so it mixes in evenly.
  • If your pesto looks too thick, just add a tiny splash of olive oil and blend again.
  • Always taste before storing   a little more salt or lemon can make a big difference!
  • Using fresh basil old leaves can turn bitter and dull the flavor.

Serving Suggestions

This pesto is a kitchen superhero! Here’s how I love to use it:

  • Toss it with warm pasta for a quick, yummy dinner
  • Spread it on toast or sandwiches for a fancy touch
  • Use it as a dip for veggies or crackers
  • Drizzle over grilled chicken or roasted veggies

Fun Fact

Did you know? “Pesto” comes from the Italian word “pestare”, which means to pound or crush. Back in the day, pesto was made with a mortar and pestle   super cool, but I love the shortcut of using a blender!
