Healthy Muhammara Recipe with Roasted Red Peppers and Walnut Dip

If you’re anything like me, you LOVE a good dip   especially one that’s easy to make, healthy, and packed with flavor. This Roasted Red Pepper and Walnut Dip, also known as Muhammara, is one of my favorite go-to snacks. It’s creamy, slightly spicy, a little tangy, and soooo tasty with crackers, pita, or veggies. The best part? I use a jar of roasted red peppers to make it super quick and easy. Let’s get dipping!

Method in Detail

1. Soak the Walnuts

To start, you’ll want to soak your walnuts in water for at least 2 hours. This might seem like a small step, but it makes a huge difference in the texture of your dip. Soaking softens the nuts, making them much easier to blend into a silky, smooth spread. If you’re in a hurry, you can soak them in hot water for about 30 minutes as a quicker alternative   but for the best results, let them sit in room temperature water. After soaking, drain the walnuts and set them aside.

2. Blend It All

Now comes the fun part! Add the soaked and drained walnuts into your food processor or blender. Then toss in the drained roasted red peppers, pomegranate molasses, Aleppo chili flakes, sumac, ground cumin, tomato paste, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, olive oil, lemon juice, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Blend everything together until the mixture becomes completely smooth and creamy. You might need to stop and scrape down the sides a couple of times to make sure everything is well mixed. The texture should be rich and thick, but still spreadable. If it feels too thick, you can add a small splash of olive oil or a teaspoon of water to loosen it up a little. Taste and adjust the seasoning   a little extra lemon or chili can really brighten it up!

3. Scoop and Top

Once your muhammara is blended to perfection, scoop it into your favorite serving bowl. This is where you can get a little creative with the toppings! Drizzle a little olive oil on top to give it a lovely shine. Then sprinkle over some juicy pomegranate seeds for a burst of sweetness and color, followed by a handful of freshly chopped parsley for freshness. For an added crunch, top it all off with a few chopped walnuts. The contrast between the creamy dip and the textured toppings makes every bite exciting!

Ingredients

  • 1 jar (320g) roasted red peppers, drained

  • 100g walnuts (soaked for 2 hours)

  • 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses

  • 1 tsp Aleppo chili flakes

  • 1 tsp sumac

  • ½ tsp ground cumin

  • 1 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 small garlic clove, minced

  • 40g breadcrumbs

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Toppings

  • Pomegranate seeds

  • A handful of chopped parsley

  • Extra chopped walnuts

  • Drizzle of olive oil

Directions

  • Soak the Walnuts: Soak your walnuts in water for about 2 hours. This makes them softer and gives the dip a creamier texture.
  • Blend It All: Add the soaked walnuts and all the other ingredients into a food processor. Blend until it’s super smooth and creamy.
  • Scoop and Top: Pour the dip into a bowl. Top it with a drizzle of olive oil, some pomegranate seeds, chopped parsley, and a few extra walnuts.

Notes

  • Don’t skip soaking the walnuts: If you blend them dry, the dip might end up gritty instead of smooth.
  • Drain the peppers well: Too much liquid can make the dip runny.
  • Go easy on the garlic: A little goes a long way. One small clove is enough.
  • Taste as you go: Everyone’s taste is different! You can adjust the lemon juice, chili flakes, or salt to your liking.

Serving Suggestions

  • Scoop it with pita chips or flatbread
  • Spread it on toast or sandwiches
  • Dip raw veggies like cucumber, carrots, or celery
  • Use it as a side with grilled meats or falafel
  • Serve it as part of a mezze platter

Fun Fact

Did you know? Muhammara comes from Syria and is a popular dish in the Middle East. The word “muhammara” means “reddened”   pretty cool, right? That’s because of the bright red color from the roasted peppers!
